Mend Opel Vectra Engine Auto

how can i fix my vectra, it keeps cutting out when I am on the road?

My 1997 vectra 1.8 auto keeps cutting out while I am on the road, but the engine it's still on, except car is not moving but crawling. Please help me fix it.

Does this problem occur all the time or just when the car gets warm?
I,m taking it from what you have said you mean the engine stays runing but you loose drive from the gearbox?
Are there any warning lights on the dash?
