Mend Ford Winstar Driving Stopped Running

what is wrong with my ford winstar van?

I was just driving and my just stopped running. The battery light came on and I just coasted without powersteering. When i stopped i tried to start it again and it sounds like it wants to turn over but just doesn't. If it was my battery I would think that it wouldn't even try to turn over. Any suggestions?

the alternator is the problem, the belt may be broken, the vehicle will run off a charged battery untill it has run down, when the alternator stops charging the battery light will come on.
