my laptop wont pick up my usb ports?

my laptop was working fine until a couple of days ago. For some reason my laptop wont recognize my usb ports. I check them and they say that they are ok , but the usb wont pick up my wireless mouse and external harddrive .please help cause i need the files on my external hardrive
