Mend Fujitsu Siemens V5535 Laptop Battery

My Fijitsu Siemens V5535 has died!?

The battery and power cord seem to be working fine, and make a whirrig sound when the plug is switched on, so why is the laptop itself completely dead? It does not switch on the fan, nor do the LED lights come on. The warrenty has run out and i am a student and so cannot afford the £100 call out charge.
