Mend Switch Work Operates

From switch to dimmer now wont work?

Im in the uk and ive just removed the old light switch which operates two cieling lights jointly. simple wires on the old box, Live to 'com' Neutral (with brown sleeve) to 'L1' and Earth into an empty junction box. wire the Dimmer exactly same way and lights wont even turn on?

I realise the unit could be faulty but is there anything else?
