Fitting New Cord?

You can buy new chord seperate £4 odd i have just fitted the chord a good length of it and it vapourized within seconds what can be wrong,there is no spring on the spool inside,should it have a spring to stop this happening.Is it a fault on the model i fitted the new chord by sticking the end in the hole then i melted the end so it would secure it from coming out of the little hole with a lighter.I wrapped it round the spool till it was nearly full then i used it for ten seconds and no chord left .Am i spooling it wrong lol ie should do it in a anti clockwise or clockwise spin with the new chord.
