why don't new washing machines have lint filters anymore?

Many new machines have built in filters that are self cleaning, and occasionally wash the lint down the drain (so why have them?). I don't think many people care if the lint goes into the sewer, so long is their lines do not plug up. The problem comes in with houses having septic tanks, since the lint can plug the leach field.
