Samsung HCL4715W wont focus itself?

The tv was given to us and we was told about the red streak but was told that it would disappear after the tv warmed up, and it will not focus itself and it has a large red kinda swiggly streak that goes for side to side, kinda looks like a big red bow and when my husband took the back off to check it out it had a hot smell to it also..we was wanting to know if it's worth fixing? and what would be wrong with it? I do not have any manuels for it.. Thank you In Advance for your help
