grinding noise mondeo?

when my car slows down there is a grinding noise coming from back wheel and then gradually goes when i pick up speed, the handbrake is holding the car fine so i dont think its the brake shoes. The noise comes and goes. By the way its a mondeo mark 1 in pretty good condition.
