not so sure. you may have a sensor going into the gearbox at front of engine side. sometimes have black boxes near battery where most of wiring is. cant picture the part you are describing.

check all wires you took off are connected. especially earth wires. speed sensor and reverse lights switch have similar connections. check no wires trapped in between gearbox and engine.
