my choke on mine works like this with the lever in a vertical plane the choke is OFF
with the lever turned through 90* choke is FULLY CLOSED
this setting is ONLY used in extreme cold weather conditions (best setting is the 45*degree one)
This is how i start my 30 year old still going suffolk
Turn on the fuel,now press the tickler pin on the top of the carburetor body till petrol starts to leak out through the overflow in the fuel bowl, turn the choke flap lever to 45* degree position, open the throttle a tiny bit off the stop block. now pull the rope engine should start first or second pull of the rope.
As the engine warms up the choke lever should be reduced back to the vertical position,( this is usually fairly quickly as the engine will run lumpy)
