Stannah 229 stairlift?

We have a right hand fitted Stairlift but the cable reeling system on it has gone wrong. A friend has a perfect very little used chair in the garage but it was from a left hand fitted staircase. Though the chairs are identical in looks I suspect that the cable reeling in/out system will work in the opposite direction. Can it be switched to run the way we need it or do we need a right hand sided chair?
