Motivator stairlift stopped working?

Hi.My dad has the motivator 1000 series stairlift which hasn't been used since mum passed away 9 months ago.He now needs to use it himself but it wont work. The remote doesn't have any display panel which i hear some models have to show error codes. The mains unit at the top of the stairs has power. The adjoining controll speed switching power adaptor has the green power light on,however we've used a light up leccy screwdriver and it doesn't detect a live feed from the wire coming out the bottom of the adaptor which runs into the stair rail.Could this be the fault and are they replaceable? Any help much appreciated.Thank you

If you have a multimeter, you can check on the 2 brass strips on the top and the bottom of the track, you should get 33V DC between them. ON the main on/ off switch on the front of the machine there should be a green LED or a 7 segment display. Is that on? In which country are you? How old is the lift? If the green LED on the front next to the on/off switch isn't on, it could be your keyswitch turned off, your seat not swiveled back all the way (if you have the swivel seat) lift over travelled, or your batteries might be dead. On both sides of the machine you have safety panels. If you take them off you will be able to get to the batteries. 2x Philips head screws in each and it clips out at the bottom.
