spring on riding mower?

murray 12hp/38'' model 38702x20a
a tension spring approx-8 to 10'' long broke,
i can not find one, and i really don't know where it
goes, it is about 1/8'' thick with a hook at both ends,
i can't find one to match, the lawnmower will not move

It won't move because the spring adds tension to the drive pulley belt attach one end to pulley and the other comes out a hole in back beneath the seat
