Sony slv d560p dvd/vcr combo powered down after playing movie. ?

My 3 year old dvd/vcr combo was working fine when after playing a dvd it powered down and seemed to die. It doesn't respond to any remode controler function. A day later the dimmed read out and red time record clock symbol has gone out. It's completely dark.
Before this all happened I had noticed that the 1 hour powered saver mode kept getting faster and faster. Would have to turn unit on often if it wasn't playing something for just a short time, then finally it powered down and didn't respond to any command. It seems like this power saver mode and what has now happened are related.

Could this be just one component that blew? Stan
