Hotpoint Ultima not working after replacing CArbon brushes?

I recently noticed the washing machine wasn’t spinning to its usual 1400 RPM and assumed the carbon brushes had just worn down. I replaced them today and now the washing machine isn’t working at all. The LCD display isn’t lighting up either. I’ve checked the sockets and fuses and they haven’t blown and there is power. What could the fault be? The washing machine was working fine apart from the low RPM before I changed the brushes. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers.
