the gas wont stay on ?

hi, when i press the switch the gas comes on the piolt light ignites the gas ,thats fine i hold the switch in for a few seconds ,i then let go and the gas goes off ,have tried this many times it just does the same thing ,if i stand there pushing in the switch for half an hour it will stay on but i have to stand there pushing in the switch ,,,,,help
