How to release and uncoil front seat belt reel?

Ford Mondeo V-Reg MK2

I unbolted and released the front passengers seat belt reel from the central pillar, naturaly the reel coiled up the slack in the belt but I dont know how to get the reel to release again allowing me to re-fit?

Any ideas?

hold the reel upright (the way its fitted on car) whilst you pull belt out. you need to pull it the way it would be when on the car.(upright) the reel has ball bearing in stopping you pulling it out any other way.
