Mend Zanussi 1250 Machine Valve Pump

How can I prevent Zanussi washing machine flooding?

Am waiting for new valve/pump for Zanussi 1250 washing machine.What can I do to prevent flooding as drum slowly fills with water.Engineer said to leave machine switched on and set control but I can't remember setting.

turn the water valves off that feed the water supply to the machine and only switch them on when you want to wash.select drain program to empty water out of the drum.
