Mend Whirlpool AWM 5145/2 Remove Programme Knob

How can I remove the programme knob from Whirlpool AWM 5145/2?

This washing machine keeps stopping mid programme and requires intervention to turn it very slightly towards the next programme to get it going again. I suspect the knob maybe clogged up with something but I can't see an obvious way to remove it for inspection...It's a Whirlpool AWM 5145/2 1400 Speed spin AA rated.

Cheers Tony..How do I test that then?? Do you know how to get the knob off without breaking it? I'm convinced it will be full of dog hairs!!

if it keeps stopping i would check the heat element first as this will cause it to pause through cycle
