My bathtub drain lever won't stay down?

I've replaced the overflow plate and it worked for about 15 minutes, then started to raise itself up (the lever, that is). Now, it won't stay down and I have to wedge a shampoo bottle between that and the faucet to drain the tub. Can anyone help!
