I've replaced the vacuum pump/fuel regulator and I lined the thicker pipe with fuel before attaching to regulator but the thinner shorter rubber line; I didn't. Should I have lined this pipe with fuel also? I also had to charge the battery before I could try and start it and it ticks over but nothing coming from engine apart from the odd pop from the exaust on occasion.
i had a problem like this with mine what it was, was a break in a wire off the alternator under the front sprocket cover and as soon as i joint the wire up it started first go

try bypassing your regulator connect a fuel hose direct from the tank to you carb and see if that makes any difference that way you can definatly prove it to be the regulator
