my peugot406 1.9 t.d will not start?

hi.my peugot will not start.we thought this was due to the diesel pump,but on striping the car engine down we found that the timing belt teeths ad worn of,this was only replaced 3000miles earlyer to this starting trouble,would this timing belt be the problem and will it of done any damage inside of the engine,the belt is still denchened around the pullys,but it seems for vsome reason that the teeth marks have worn off quickly for some own known reason,any help would be much greatfull JOHN
