My player worked and then stopped?

My mp3/mp4 player was working fine and then one day I was on my way to work and plugged in my head phones and it sounds hazy or scratchy. All the music is still there and playing. I can still function it from screen to screen and everything. but it sounds horrible. My head phones work in my other devices well so im sure thats not the problem. and its fairly new, not even a year used. can it be fixed and is there a way for me to do it myself?
