how do i fix my sticking accelorator pedal on my l reg, 1.4i, escort?

my escort has in the last couple of days developed a sticking accelorator pedal. when i am driving along it is sticking so that when i want to brake i am forcing it against the gas in which it thinks i am still touching (however im not). i am worried it will burn out my clutch as it continues to do it whilst i am changing gears and is using petrol even though im not pressing on the accelorator. im no mechanic as im only a uni student so would greatly appreciate some help from someone that means i dont have to fork out more money for a mechanic. thank you
