Does sound like a fuel problem if the engine is "hunting". Has the fuel filler cap got a clear vent? If it starts first time after cutting out, it would appear that there is a restricted flow of fuel. So, maybe look for fuel filters first, if no luck there then it looks like you may have to do a carb clean, starting with draining off any residule in the carb bowl.
