How can I snap my locking tabs?

I've just replaced the dogs on my Whirlpool washer agitator, but the locking tabs will not snap back together. There does not seem to be enough room inside of the thrust spacer to get even close enough. One of the tabs on the base snapped loose when I pushed. How can I re-attach the top to the base?
