how do i recode key fob to acctivate central locking?

is it due for a new battery? please bear in mind some fob batterys have a time window in which they must be changed or you may have to resync the fob to the car...p.s if you do try a battery you dont have to go to the dealer any motor factors will sell them for about a pound or so.
