How can i fix my Hotpoint BWD12?

My washer/dryer gets stuck on the wash cycle and won't move on to the rinse or spin. It will let me manually put the rinse on and the will go on to the spin on its own, but only after its been turned off for 5 mins or so. My machine is about 5 yrs old now and was wondering if it will be expensive to fix if so will it be better just to buy a new one.
