For those interested if at any time in the future someone has a similar dilemma; the smoking and the stink was attributed to the fact the pump pressure was set too high for the nozzle (I had an 0.85 nozzle so should have used around 9bar/9.5bar, not 12 - the manual told me it was 12 but that was for a 0.60 nozzle at a flow rate of around 2kg/h). I lowered the pressure to 9bar. Then I jacked the air damper right up and now it doesn't smoke or smell at all.
I still need to test it, but, at least like this I don't need to do it in a hurry.
