not clocking up the miles?

Hi there,i have a fiat bravo (v reg) 1999 and i have encountered a problem..Sometimes the mileage counter comes on and then without warning it goes of and does not clock up any miles at all..On occassions the mileage counter get all jubled up so you cannot make any reading off it..Please help with any suggestions..
