Flashing is the act of updating firmware.
Firmware is software embedded semi-permanently in a memory chip - ROM (read Only Memory) - non volatile - does not lose contents when power is removed.
You change the software when the new software is better for you than the old.
Often downloaded to a computer as a Zip file - unzipped and "flashed" (installed) into the target device.
The BIOS in your computer can be similarly re-flashed.
Sorry about the Freudian references to Unzipping and Flashing - purely incidental.
