cant work the tv from the remote control?

is it the proper remote or a multi function one that needs a CODE entered after battery change, this test is for the remote control without a light fitted need a digital camera turned on look through the viewfinder while someone works the remote ,if remote is working each time a button is pressed you will see in the view finder a BRIGHT FLASH OF WHITE LIGHT this proves the remote is TRANSMITTING therefore may have trouble with the RECEIVER in the telly
