Cannon Electric oven - thermostat on fire?

I have a Cannon Henley oven (3 yrs old). Thermostat for main oven caught fire. I can replace this, but shouldn't there be a safety cut-out of some kind to prevent this? If the oven was set on a timer and we were out this could have been serious.
