ford transit 80 swb x reg?

having trouble with starting my van first thing. But when started ie jump leads no trouble rest of the day.
the ather morning try to start it. The starter motor kept on turning when i had taken out the key had to disconnect the battery to stop it got very hot. i've tried new battery clean all earth points. Got a new starter motor worried about putting it on. i have been told about cold start soleniod have no idear about this as it hasnt got glow plugs. can any one out there please help
