what is the proper placement of the wires on my MTD starer solenoid?

Solenoids are pretty well all the same. They have two large nuts, one on each side for your large wires, one from battery and one to the starter. Below there can be 1 or 2 posts if yours has only 1 then purchase one with only one. It goes to the ignition switch. The second pole is only for ground, if required. Disconnect your ground on your battery and change it over the reconnect it and that should do it.
