My escort won't start ?

starting could be due to dodgy or dirty plugs could even be rotor arm or points and the ticking sound could be the tappets...if its only when started and gets faster and slower if the engine speed is increased or decreased(while revving up in neutral).....1.1 or 1.3 fiestas and escorts are prone to this sometimes fixable but sometimes not even though its noisy its ok....good luck
