Mend Rover 400 Switch Fault

Rover 400 saloon heater fan speed switch fault?

The heater fan/blower speed control switch has 4 settings. The fan will not work on the two lower speeds but works normally on the two higher speed settings. I suspect that there is some sort of electrical resistor arrangement but apart from physically removing the controls and tracing back through the system, I don't know where to look! Any ideas please?

all the advice here is good and correct. however I have just replaced the resistor pack on my 1998 416sli with a brand new one and it's still the same - speeds 1 and 2 don't work - speeds 3 and 4 ok. I've checked the No 13 fuse (7.5A) behind the drivers cubby box and it's ok, and I've checked the 2 fuses in the engine compartment and they are ok. Any ideas? Could it be the rotary fan speed switch? and what a coincidence if it so.

you may have fixed this by now. i had the same problem on a 200 rover. the resister pack is situated behind the glove box. it is held in by a few screws and once glove boxe is removed takes only minutes to replace. i replaced mine with a second hand unit from a scra[ yard.

This is caused by a blown resistor. I fixed mine in half an hour. Open the passenger side glove box and remove the screws at the top so that the box drops. Behind you will see a black air duct with a plug in connector on top: unplug this connector and remove the two screws that hold the socket to the duct. Remove the plate and you should see three resistors which look like springs; one will be blown. Go to Maplin and ask for a '10watt 1 ohm Resistor' and solder this in place of the blown one. Re-assemble in revere order and fan should work. Resistor cost about 50p or less.

Many thanks Dib, Andy P and mutley. Excellent info and fan speeds restored.
All the best.

It is wire resistor blown.

Search on eBay for "rover heater fan resistor 4 speeds back". It should come up with a listing for some ceramic resistors suitable for the job. I have just bought some of these and will be fitting them this weekend. A friend has already used some to great success.

Good luck.

I have just diagnosed this on my dads 400. Exactly the same fault..speeds 1 and 2 not working.
If you drop the glovebox by squeezing the sides so it lowers more than usual there is a small panel with a four way plug in front of you (wires are all blue + coloured tracer). it is held in with two screws. It has three resistor coils on the inside (in air flow to keep cool) like bulb filaments. The larger coil will be broken. I'm still to source a replacement so can't help you there yet.
