Mend Started Switched Work

what is wrong with my lights?

My kitchen and living room lights started to flicker and go dim - I switched off the kitchen lights - the living room lights went out - now they wont work in either room - the fuse is ok and the upstairs and hall light is ok help

I am an engineer Paul and it is unprofessional to question other peoples' qualifications when you have added nothing to the argument yourself

The hall will work because it is often two way lighting on stairs and can be wired with up or down lighting circuits.

A qualified spark such as me would know this so you should ignore the previous two contibutors who are clearly not qualified.

Your problem should be professionally diagnosed because a fire before Xmas is not what you want!

If you are in the Midlands and want it fixed before Xmas call 07747 571292.

If Richards good advice didn't work out I'd get a sparky in, it sounds like a loose wire. probably behind a cieling rose. Loose wiring can spark and get hot I don't like the idea that your kitchen switches suddenly started switching the living room lights.
this is not a good project for someone who had to ask this question.
sorry.

Sounds interesting! Usually all ground floor lights are on the same circuit (hall/landing could be on ground or first). Do ANY of your ground floor ceiling mounted lights work? If not it sounds like something has blown. If some ARE working then you need to look elsewhere. Are your kitchen/living room lights low voltage halogen ones ? If they are they have their own transformers to change the 240volt mains into a 12volt supply - these do fail from time to time.
If you feel competent to do it and you have a mains tester screwdriver or meter you can always see if you have a live supply at the relevant switches.
Hope some of this may help.
