Iveco 3510 S reg rev counter not working?

I have checked the connections behind the dash and also the fuses. Where is the pick up from the engine? Is this a common problem? What is the best way to diagnose what the problem could be. It does not move the needle at all, of course I did try the tap it n see approach! Any suggestions you wonderful lot
