ESCORT DIESLE?

Hi I have a ford escort diesle van 55, It stopped thid morning and cant start it since, I have tried easy start but nothing, just turns over, I am not that up on Diesle engined although ok on petrol, I have removed the pipes from the injecters (normally where the spark plugs are) and turned the engine, the fuel does not squirt out it just spits? is this correct? I have also removed the pipe from the manual pump on the side of the engine, it seems to squirt from here.
