stew was right just change unit over,tape old transponder keyon inside of steering column plastic cover within range of transponder pick up.job done

Thanks stupid stuart - for nothing!
I believe there is an immobiliser transponder by the switch. What happens if I get a switch with new key barrel. The key is coded and will be different.
THAT was what the question was about.

Remove existing ignition switch and refit in reverse order with new ignition switch
