chaffoteaux MX2 30FF no flame detection?

our 4 year old boiler has started to intermittently give a no flame detection fault code. resetting the boiler usually cures it for a day or two. is this a common problem on these, and is it an easy fix.

Had the same issue with intermittent flame out being reported, usually after 15-30 ins of working and happens due to not relighting. I have had the house with this boiler for around 3 years and suspect it was in for a few years before that.

We replaced electrodes, no change, replaced the ignition unit, again no change, then finally replaced the PCBs with a pair of new/boxed PCBs (2013 date code)(you change the two PCBs as a matched pair according to docs).

This fixed the fault, obviously there was a weakness on the PCB as so many folk have the same issue.

Looking at the problem everyone is having with this C&M boiler (Ariston) I think I'd be wasting my time asking for a cure on here. I have the same problem and will just accept the boiler is a load of crap. Like ARISTON who I rang for information and was left listening to garbage for seemingly ever before I hung up. I'l make sure my next boiler has nothing to do with ARISTON...

I think it's to do with pressure.

Mine only does this if the presssure drops overnihght and it tries to ignite next day finding low pressure.

If I top it up a bit and reset it's fine.

A few words about safety
Boilers, regardles of type are designed to fail safe, simply put, this means that certain condtions need to be met to ensure safe operation, some reader may be tempted to bypass safety swiches or devices in order to get the boiler operational until they have time to effect a permanent repair, this completly reverses the logic of fail safe and should not be attempted, DON'T DO IT.

A quick comment for Jgas, the way to detemine if the if the if the flame detection is working or not, is to disconect it from the fly lead connector, if the revevent section of pcb is working ok, it should shut down within a few seconds, if it stays lit suspect pcb fault.

Next test is to short out flame detecter with a fly lead to ground (don't try this with the ignition electode),
powerup the boiler it should intially light, and shut down within a few seconds, if it stays lit suspect the pcb is faulty.

check flame probe and lead to pcb
if this is ok ,it sounds like pcb at fault

Same problem as all of the others, no flame detection and shut down, the problem seems to have two possible causes 1, faulty ignition or flame detection electodes due to poor insultaion, burnt ends or out of alignment, resulting in inconsisent ignition and poor flame detection, both electodes are interchangeable so if tracking or arcing is suspected you could swop them over.
Cause 2, It would seem to me to be a design flaw with the burner assembly, which has a tendency to lint-up requiring frequent cleaning.

My boiler is the MX2 24FF. I also have the same problem. It requires to be reset if both heating and hot water are used simultaneously. It runs fine after resetting if it is only hot water or only central heating. The fault is also intermittent. Occassionally for several hours at a time it will run normally. Can anyone tell me how to cure this. Also where I can source the parts required and the cost of these parts. Can it be done by a diyer.

Our previous boiler went mad, was condemned by the plumber. He installed the C&M boiler, which was fine at first, but started to reset almost as soon as it had to supply central heating and/or hot water.

I phoned the C&M "Helpline" who were rude and snotty, and said that it was nothing do with them.

Called in a different plumber, who said it was a design flaw on the PCB which tended to fail due to overheating. He managed to get hold of a new PCB and installed it. Problem solved ( for a while).

Boiler will provide hot water, but goes to reset when we use the central heating. Anyone fancy bringing a class action against C&M?

Hi Craig, out of interest how much is it to replace the PCB? ive looked online and found they are available at £41.41 plus VAT but the plumber we used quoted £161 plus VAT, big difference, but I know nothing about these things so normally believe and trust everything he says....until now!!
As for changing the whole unit, theres no way I can afford a new boiler, not when this 1 isnt even 4 yrs old yet!!

Hello all

Mine is also four years old, had a new PCB at 14months old and has again started having the problem you all mention. This has been recurring every winter for the last three years!
I've had a look inside and tested a few things and it does appear to be the PCB.
A plumber friend of mine recommends changing the whole unit for another brand!

Hi Paul, have you managed to find out whats wrong with your boiler yet? Im still without heating and hot water, am currently waiting for my plumber to get a part but not sure thats going to solve the problem. I have read on some other message boards that around the time our boilers were made, they had a series of faults with the PCB's so a few people suggest this is the main cause of our problem. Someone said they cost about £130 to replace but if this is the problem, hunt about for the PCB, Ive been searching out of interest and found them between £30 and £55. I hope this isnt the problem with mine and am hoping mine will be fixed tomorrow when my plumber gets this other part but knowing my luck it will be the PCB!
