Mend Singer 457 Sewing Machine Repair Bobbin

replacing the gear in Singer 457?

After reading your advice to another Singer owner, re:- bobbin and tension hook(?) I have discovered that the gear on the verticle shaft under the top of the machine has crumbled, how do I get to the shaft to replace it please?
