my top e string does not ring true?

I'm assuming you've changed the string. There are a couple of options, one it to have a play with the saddle on the bridge to see if it makes a difference or get the nut files. Something which works for me is putting a small blob of Vaseline mixed with pencil lead in the nut groove to lubricate it.
