How can I have two computers on the net at the same time?

I've just bought a router in the hope of connecting two computers to the internet at the same time. The router has been configured with both computers & proved to be working but I still can't get both computers on the internet at the same time. I'm with virgin media, have broadband cable connection and running windows XP, the router is an 'TP LINK CABLE/DSL' router. Can anyone please advise me? Is it a memory problem, speed problem, do I need a more powerful router? Can someone please advise?

I just had a thought. In order for the router to work correctly you must have your cable modem plugged into the router's WAN port. The two PCs each plug into one of the LAN ports. They all look alike (RJ45 sockets) but are labeled differently.

Just to clarify Bob's post, the OP DOES have the correct router.

My son and I are connected via our BT phone line using Broadband and with filters on each box can use net and phones all at the same time. So as your on cable supplied network you may need a different router so contact server/Virgin media tell them the problem. Sorry can't be of anymore help. Meanwhile take note of T and re-install he may be right.
Oh! don't get talked in to another phone line it may be cheaper to turn to BT for all phones an all.

Its difficult to help because I can't see what you can see. However, you don't need a new router nor a more powerful one. I have not found that many broken out of the box not have I found them difficult to install.

May I suggest that your reinstall it following the instructions that came with it - to the letter! In addition ensure that the TCP/IP settings for your Ethernet (I'm guessing Ethernet because you don't say what you are using.) adapters on each PC are set for DHCP.

should be working unless your router is only sending information at 1 at a time either call your internet company or get a new router
