hi i have a rover 45 1,6 and the clutch sometimes just stays down but then if you stamp on it a few times it comes back up what could be causing this problem

Ah, now I've had this problem twice now... 1st time I took it to Mr Clutch who claimed that I needed a new clutch (and duly fitted me one). However, 11 months and 16k miles later it happened again - so I decided to go out and check the reservoir (as it says on here) -which was full. So, I then got my wife to press on the pedal and we could here a squeaking inside the engine bay - I tracked it down to an arm that is pushed by the clutch mechanism on the top right of the gearbox/clutch housing aprox 18" inches to right of centre from radiator. The bold holding the arm in place was rusty and movement was not very good so, I got some WD40 on it and hey presto, my clutch works much like new as the arm how has more movement. Needless to say I need to give it a more thorough run and see how it goes but I do see this now as an ongoing maintainance issue.

remove the air filter and housing (2 screws) and with draw from engine bay. remove plastic collar from slave cylinder and push away from you to remove. use an open ended spaner to push coller in to anodised pipe joint and pull pipe apart . you can now remove faulty item. it took me 5 mins with NO technical knowledge. refit is reverse of removal, and on some models, like the 1.4 16v, the cylinder has a self bleed mechanism , so just keep filling the reservoir till its full to the max leve. easy.

Hello,
Has the clutch reservoir lost fluid (small round black pot with a pull off lid next to the brake servo on the bulkhead) as it sounds like you've lost hydraulic presure on the pedal, the burning oil smell could be from a leaking slave cylinder which on my diesel is under the starter motor on the bell housing.
