when I turn the key on my iveco 35 10 daily it won't start. Starter?

I have an iveco 35 10 daily turbo diesel van (1996 P). When I turn the key the lights come on and I hear a click but the engine does not start. It did this a few times but I managed to start it by keeping on trying but now it does not start. I have tried rocking it, etc. but no good. Could it be the starter motor? If it is should I change the solenoid as well as the starter?
One slight hitch is that I don't know where the starter is located on the engine. Is there anywhere online I can get a diagram of the engine and where the starter is located? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i assume the click you hear is after the first click of the heater plugs???

it will be solenoid connectoin .
dont fit new starter until you check it .

Thanks B. Your help is much appreciated. The starter is in a very awkward place tucked nicely behind the exhaust pipe. I have changed a starter in a very simple skoda before now and it only took about 10 minutes. This one will take me some time and some struggling. It might be worth getting a quote from a local garage first. I know I can get a recon starter for £95 - £150.

Oops yes metal bar was a bad choice as the battery live is connected directly to the starter motor, hence the advice to use a wooden tool. At least it was only a small spark and you are up and running. However it kind of confirms that your starter motor is sticking, a common problem. It does need replaced or at least stripped, cleaned and lubricated properly, and yes sodds law says that it will fail on you at the worst possible moment.

Dont know the exact location of the starter motor or your mechanical ability but needs dealt with sooner rather than later, but remember ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE working on the starter motor or anything electrical for that matter. Make sure you have the code for your radio if it has one before disconnecting the battery though or that will be your next problem.

I persevered and finally found the starter motor, really difficult to see, let alone get to. I tapped on the solenoid and the starter with a metal bar (probably a bad choice of tool as the solenoid gave a little spark). This got the van going!!!!! Thanks again, but what does it mean for the long term prospect. Is it likely to go on at the worst possible time.? Please advise. Thanks.

Thanks very much to caine and B. I have tried doing this but the cable disappears into the back and beyond of the engine. I must be blind or something. Anyway, I'll have to keep looking. Thanks again.

Yup just follow the cable as Caine says and it leads right to the starter motor.

before u do anything,try jump starting it.if still no go,then dissconnect the red + battery lead and follow the thick cable down to the startermotor solonoid.comes as full unit.recon replacment best option.

Thanks B for your answer. I have done what you suggested but still no result. I don't know where the starter is located on the iveco 3510 daily engine. It is a 2.8 trubo diesel. Are you able to tell me where abouts it is on the engine? I will then whack it with the stick. I'm trying to sort it myself as money is in short supply. Trying to avoid garage bills.

Hi your "click" is the solenoid coming in and at this point it should turn the starter motor and throw the the worm gear inside the starter motor forward, at the same time.

This shows how it works. Sometimes if you put the car in gear say 4th and rock it back and forth this sometimes helps. Another trick is to bang the starter motor with a piece of wood to "unstick it" this will also get you going. The bottom line is to get it out and replaced or overhauled. If you dont know what you are doing get a mechanic to do it or at least someone who knows what they are doing. MOST importantly is to disconnect the battery BEFORE you do anything with the starter motor.
