MEGANE RF RE-PROGRAMMING

Hold the remote control button down for longer than 10 seconds (until
the red tell tale light on the key extinguishes) then press it again 3
times. Check that the doors lock and unlock correctly.

MEGANE WITH EARLY REMOTE (LED SWITCHES OFF WHEN HOLDING
BUTTON DOWN)

1. Igniton ON

2. Press and hold the central locking button for 5 seconds

3. LED on the dash board will go off, come back on and begin to flash.
The flashes correspond to the first digit of the 4 PIN security code
release the button when the first digit has been "flashed" and then
press the button again.

4. Wait for the second digit to be "flashed" then release and re-press
the button continue until all digits have been entered.

5. If you have entered the code correctly the LED will then go out and
the car can be started to code the remote, switch off the ignition and
press the central locking button again.

6. Press remote button 2 times within the immediate vicinity of the
pick up (in the roof). On some vehicles you may need to switch the
ignition back on to achieve this however.

I have a similar problem in as much as, the central locking 'plip' works and the light on the dash stops flashing. However putting the key in the ignition I have nothing. Leads me to believe there is a fuse blown but I'm not sure which fuse would take care of the ignition side of things as the layout on the fuse cover gives me no clue. Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't have the immo by-pass code with the cars documents you dont need to pay to get it, just Copy-and-paste the following url into your browser address bar, download the "immobiliser test kit" and it will tell you your cars bypass code free of charge

http://www.bba-reman.com/content.aspx?content=Test_for_Renault_Key_Immobiliser_failures_emergency_recode

As Gavin says, you have to put the code in every time, but at least you're mobile. IIRC if you restart the car within 10 minutes of switching off you dont have to re-enter the code, so if you accidentally stall the car you aren't frantically pushing buttons to get going again!!

It is an infra-red type remote isn't it? My Renault was an N reg., I'm not sure when they changed to R.F. type.
Assuming it is I.R., check the key is working by pointing it into the lens of a camera phone (with the camera switched on, obviously) and push the button on the key while watching the camera screen. You should see a flash if it's working.

If the key is working it could be the receiver (the small black dome on the roof next to the lights/rearview mirror) which is faulty. This is fairly common as water gets in through the aerial mount. It's fairly easy to remove the unit and have a look, give it a blow with a hair-dryer then try the re-set procedure again.
A new I.R. receiver is about £40/£50.

Having said all that, these immobilisers are not the greatest, and as a last resort you may have to remove the unit (the immobiliser unit that is, not the receiver unit) and send it away to be by-passed. If so, dont let the Renault dealer do it, they'll charge a fortune!

Press the central locking button (it's either on the dash or down by the handbrake) and hold it down for at least five seconds. The doors should lock and unlock and the immobiliser light should come on.

Within fifteen seconds point the key at the receiver and push the key button once. The doors should lock and unlock and you should be able to start the car.
