why does my renault scenic smell of petrol when starting?

Hi I have a renault scenic 2000 1.6 rxe and when I first start it up there is a very strong smell of petrol which lasts a couple of minutes and then disappears so far my local garage has done a full service and changed all 4 coils as they told me this was a contributing factor but it has not helped in the slightest
was hoping someone else has had the same problem and found the solution

my local garage have not bothered to do this I am guessing they don't have the equipment I have the number of a garage that has been recommended to me this evening
they only deal with renaults and can hook it up to the diagnostic unit and hopefully tell me what the problem is your reply has also given me the same info I got from a friend of a friend so it must be worth looking into I will let you know how it goes

You dont mention ecu stored fault codes,did'nt they run a diagnostic test?Without test codes you/they are guessing,expensive way to fix a fault.That said I'd suspect the temp sensor.they are known to rot but still work within limits.Basically it puts the "choke" on every time the engine starts.and as this engine does'nt have a choke as such,it means it runs rich,hence fuel smell.But only way to be sure is to code read it.
